Kamakahonu “the turtle eye” is named after the rock shaped like a turtle located in Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai’i. Constructed around 1812, Kamakahonu was the setting place where King Kamehameha I spent his concluding years, navigating the Islands of the Hawaiian Kingdom through a period of significant change and consolidation of his sovereignty.
